The Unit was set up in 1998 when IEG was identified as one of the four core institutions for furthering capacity building in Environmental Economics under the Environment Management and Capacity Building Technical Assistance Programme funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. This was a five year programme. Further, in 2001, an endowment grant was given to IEG by the Ford Foundation to create a Professorial Chair in Environmental and Resource Economics with associated support. This resulted in the creation of a more permanent unit for studies in this area. The Unit now has three faculty members and has several on-going sponsored and self-initiated research projects. Interest in this area is shared by faculty in other sections and units as well. IEG faculty has contributed extensively to research, training, advising and networking in this emerging area of the social sciences over the last decade and more.
