Abstract:-
Indian Agriculture stands at cross roads at this juncture. On one hand the productivity of food grains looks to be stabilized while on the other most of the cultivating families are facing issues of sustenance as they cannot survive merely on the produce from their land holdings alone. This situation today perhaps permeates beyond the Marginal Holdings as well. The situation is compounded by the fact that the economy is not creating jobs and post covid the pressure on land in the rural context perhaps has increased. In addition, the traditional issues that have begged attention have remained; indebtedness, crop intensity and fragmentation of holdings. This situation in India’s agriculture has been in the making for the last at least four to five decades. As a structural issue the approach to get to its resolution will have to be structural as well. My discussion will focus on some of the structural fault lines and a possible approach towards overcoming those. My insights are based on some of the field work that I have been engaged with over the last two decades around these issues.
