Abstract:-
Parental aspirations matter for children’s educational attainment. These aspirations may be influenced by parents’ education, access to educational opportunities, and cultural factors. By linking mothers and fathers to their daughters and sons, the study tests for gender differences in parental aspirations for their children. Furthermore, it explores the role of culture – captured by Jati – and region in determining differential aspirations. Intergenerational mobility literature has overlooked women and their daughters, especially in societies that observe patrilocality. By using data from the India Human Development Survey (IHDS), this paper aims to bring women to the fore of the generational social mobility literature by examining cultural nuances that play out in educating one’s daughters vis-a-vis one’s sons.
